The name of the script that is used for Punjabi language is called Gurmukhi script. The word Gurmukhi is made by two words Guru and mukhi which literally means 'from the mouth of the Guru'. The Holy scripture of Sikhs 'Guru Granth Sahib' is written in this script. The second Sikh Guru Angad Dev ji has developed this script. There are 35 alphabets in Punjabi language, so the alphabets are also sometimes called 'Paintee'. The loan words mostly from Persho-Arabic sources are also used in this language. To fulfill the requirement of such sounds, the dot is used below the six letters of this script. With the addition of these six letters, the alphabets become forty one in number. This script is written from left to right and the letters are normally aligned below the line of writing.

Gurmukhi script is designed in a very systematic way. In the beginning of the script, there are three basic vowels U,ə,I. The remaining are the consonants and semi-consonants or semi-vowels. U is a back vowel, ə is the central vowel and I is the front vowel. Similarly the consonants are divided into five main series, which are known as k,c, ṭ,t,p series. K belong to Velar sound, C series belong to Palato-alveolar sounds. ṭ series belong the reltroflex sounds. t series belong to dental sounds. p series belong to bilabial sounds. The remaining sounds are put into alveolar fricative, glottal fricative, palatal frictionless continuant, trill, lateral, labio-dental frictionless, flap, palato-alveolar fricative, velar fricative, alveolar fricative, labio-dental fricative and retroflex lateral categories.

As mentioned above, there are three basic vowels / U ə I / in the Gurmukhi script. But there are nine matras which are used with these vowels. These becomes ten in number. Within these three basic vowels, the two vowels U and I can't occur independently in this form. These vowels are used with the different matras. Only ə can occur independently in word initially. When this letter comes medially or finally it is not written.

When these vowel sounds mark with consonants, only matras are used. There are six accessary signs used in the Gurumukhi script. These are Bindi tippi, adhak, ' the short form ṛ / v / h. The three sign Bindi, Tippi and adhak are used above the letters and the remaining three signs are used below the letters.
